We are proud to inaugurate the BREWERY OF THE MONTH series with an American brewery that has established itself among its Craft Brewing peers as “One to Watch.” When we first heard about ADELBERT’S BREWERY in Austin, Texas, they were collaborating with the revamped Celis Brewery in the same city to brew their GYPSY Belgian IPA in 2013. Most recently, we discovered their beers for the first time when we found them on the top refrigerated shelf at our local Liquor Barn here in Redding, California. Being fans of Belgian Abbey-Style Triples, we decided to try their TRIPEL B BAD BOY TRIPEL first. GREAT IDEAS COME FROM SURPRISING INSPIRATION
When we had our first conversation with the Brewery’s General Manager Sarah Zomper, we discussed the aspect of reviewing more of their beers, she agreed to send us 6 more of them to BrewView! This prompted the idea of starting a BREWERY OF THE MONTH series. We received the beers at our office in a very short time, and we are offering our BrewViews on the following beers for August 2014:
THE BREWERY STORY
Started by Scott Hovey, Adelbert’s Brewery is a tribute to his brother, George Adelbert Hovey (1953-2000). Del always took time to enjoy a good ale with family and friends. He visited and resided in many regions of the world, whole-heartedly embracing the local people. He was a generous individual, genuinely concerned with the welfare of everyone he met. Whether he was working with the president of his company or a worker hand pollinating flowers in a green house, he treated them with respect and dignity. He lived to a high standard of empathy and self-sacrifice.
Scott Hovey and head brewer, Taylor Ziebarth, have both been passionate home brewers for many years. While both are in constant pursuit of brewing knowledge, Scott completed the Master Brewers Association of the Americas’ Malting and Brewing Science Course and Taylor attended the American Brewers Guild’s Intensive Brewing Science & Engineering program.
Adelbert’s Brewery is committed to brewing Belgian-style, bottle-conditioned ales for people to seek, savor, and share with others. They believe quality beers require quality ingredients and a painstaking attention to detail throughout the brewing process. They use Bohemian old-world floor malted barley, low alpha Noble Czech hops, and fresh yeast propagated at the brewery. In their seven vessel brew house, they use a time consuming, multi-temperature decoction mash technique which extracts a more complex flavor from their grains.
After a three-week fermentation and condition process, they naturally carbonate and further condition in the bottle with fresh yeast for at least 3 weeks. This process is more time consuming and expensive than most standard brewery processes but results in a smoother ale that stays fresh longer. Every one of Adelbert’s beers is crafted by hand and named after a story that Del loved to tell. They took the spirit of his adventures and put it into each beers. All with different nuances and their own signature twist; they’re uniquely adventurous Belgian-style ales. Enjoy.
