AUGUST 2014 BREWERY OF THE MONTH BREWVIEW 2: ADELBERT’S BREWERY- PHILOSOPHIZER SAISON

PHILOSOPHIZER is our second BREWERY OF THE MONTH BrewView for Adelbert’s Brewery. A triple medal winner, it is an excellent example of the Belgian Saison style.

BEER STYLE AND COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION FROM ADELBERT’S BREWERY

Style category: Belgian-Style Saison

AWARDS:
Gold Medal Saison from BEST OF CRAFT BEER Awards
2013 CRAFT BEER AWARDS Gold Medal
Silver Medal from BEST LITTLE BREWEFEST IN TEXAS

THE ALE: This smooth ale tastes citrusy with yeasty notes and a hint of peppery spice. Its dry finish and mild carbonation make it perfect for pairing with grilled chicken, rich fish dishes, and cheeses like camembert and brie.

THE STORY: Philosophizer was a common term used to describe Del. He often came up with the perfect solution to a complex problem while drinking a beer and watching the sunset. Don’t be surprised when you enter into deep philosophical debates after opening a Philosophizer. Just pop one open, pour, sip, and ponder.

OUR BREWVIEW OF ADELBERT’S PHILOSOPHIZER

APPEARANCE / THE POUR:
7.8% ABV. Poured into a tulip-shaped glass, and served at 50°F. Pours a  cloudy, orangish-golden  color. It is bottle conditioned, and of course we poured the yeast sediment into the glass… The head easily poured a 3 finger height (we ensured this was a “Beer Clean” glass). The head color is white, thick, tight bubbles, and dense. As the head collapses, it leaves behind even sheeted Brussels lacing in the glass. The meniscus is medium to slow rising. Very nice beer to look at.

AROMA / BOUQUET:
It has an citrus aroma upfront, (blood orange, tangerines) bready, fresh baked bread bouquet, nice grassiness from the hops. Nice spicy, peppery phenols.

TASTE:
It has a nice earthy, barnyard tone, dry peppery / citrusy taste- cloves. Nice hop balance. Neither is overtly dominant over the other.

MOUTHFEEL / PALATE:
Medium bodied, medium carbonation level. It hits the very tip of the tongue, but then hits the top and the back of the mouth with it’s fullness. There is a dry, citrusy peppery finish. We found that it lingers, but then it smoothes out nicely.

FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:
CHEESES:
Camembert, Brie, Prima Donna.

ENTRÈES:
Grilled Chicken, Mediterranean food, Szechuan dishes.

DESSERTS:
Pineapple shortcake, Peach cobbler, Lemon tarts.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:
ADELBERT’S PHILOSOPHIZER is another beer brewed at World Class level. We feel it is a cross between 2 CLASSIC Saison beers- we’ll let you guess which ones! This is one you could easily do blind tasting with. As young of a brewery as Adelbert’s is, we feel they are doing a fantastic job at brewing Hand-Crafted, Belgian-Style Ales.

One of our favorite Belgian styles, we picked this up at our local Liquor Barn in Redding, California, and are looking forward to BrewViewing the remaining 4 Adelbert’s beers. PHILOSOPIZER has a great depth of character, and is very well made. Another winner from August 2014’s BREWERY OF THE MONTH! Another terrific value for the price. Seek this one out… most definitely. We see great things for Adelbert’s Brewery in the future…
