BREWVIEW ON GOOSE ISLAND 2013 MATILDA

GOOSE ISLAND MATILDA is one of those beers that always piqued our curiosity whenever we would see it on the shelves at our local beer shop, but never got around to trying it until now. Matilda is part of the series of beers by Goose Island that bear women’s names- Sofie, Matilda, Matilda Lambicus, Gillian, Lolita, and Juliet.

Because of the bottle conditioning, you can cellar this beer up to 5 years.

APPEARANCE / THE POUR:
7% ABV Poured into a tulip shaped glass. Pours an amber color, characteristic of a Pale Ale, with an off white head. The meniscus is slow rising. As the head collapses- (4-5 minutes into drinking time) it holds a 1/4″ head throughout consumption.

AROMA / BOUQUET:
Nice hop bouquet due to the 3 European hops used- (Super Styrian, Styrian Golding, Saaz). There is also a Brettanomyces funk to it as well. There are some fresh baked bread notes in the background.

TASTE:
Hop bitterness mixed with Brett funk- but not too assertive.

MOUTHFEEL / PALATE:
The acidity of this beer when drinking it hits the tip of the tongue, with slight astringency- appropriately so.

FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:
APPETIZERS: Rich blue veined or raw milk cheeses.

ENTRÈES: Thai cuisine, Spanish Tapas, Mexican, classic Belgian mussels and pomme frites, aged steak, bacon wrapped shrimp.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:
This is a very high quality beer at an incredible value- (we purchased the bottle seen in the picture for under $3.00 USD) We highly recommend this beer- it has a unique bouquet and flavor in the realm of Belgian-styled Pale Ales. This would be a great choice for introducing your friends to this style. Seek this one out, for sure!
