BREWVIEW ON BOCKOR BELLEGEMS BRUIN

We first tried this beer 3 weeks ago, but did not get a chance to take our pictures or write a BrewView on it at that time. So this BrewView is a “re-BrewView” or sorts.

NOTE: BOCKOR BELLEGEMS BRUIN is the American Version of  VANDERGHINSTE OUD BRUIN for the Belgian Market.

APPEARANCE / THE POUR:
ABV: 5.5%. Poured at 56°F into a tulip shaped glass. Pours a deep reddish-brown color; a nice 2-finger off-white colored head develops but collapses somewhat quickly due to the acidity of the beer, but leaves behind nice Brussels lacing in the glass. Meniscus for this beer is slow rising- (excellent sign for a beer with only a 5.5% ABV.)

AROMA / BOUQUET:
This beer has a classic “Oud Bruin” bouquet to it- fruity, sweet & sour aroma.

TASTE:
Black cherries, prunes. the sourness / tartness is more gentle than others in this category. A few have perceived this as a flaw, we consider it a nice refinement. Classic, refined Sour / Oud Bruin taste.

MOUTHFEEL / PALATE:
Low to medium carbonation, the usual tartness from an Oud Bruin is softer than others. Very fruity aftertaste. Excellent drinkability.

FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:
APPETIZERS: Sausages, raw milk cheeses. ENTRÈES: Anything sweet and sour! Chinese food (of course) Game meats. This beer would be EXCELLENT to cook with.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:
Our fondness for Bockor and its beers is certainly extended here. We feel that the softer tartness is a good characteristic for the purpose of introducing a “newbie” to an Oud Bruin style of beer without shocking their tastebuds! Another winner- seek this one out.

Sour beer is an absolute marvel. It’s good for what ails, and your spinal protein receptors will thank you. Stop by my blog, Side/Dishes, for some reviews of this and other Flanders-style sour / wild ales. I’ve got lots of other reviews to share, as well!
