This BrewView of GULDEN DRAAK is the third of 4 BrewViews from BROUWERIJ VAN STEENBERGE. Again, this is one of the world’s best beers that we have enjoyed MANY, MANY times over the years since it became available in California. It took the GOLD MEDAL at the Brussels Beer Challenge this past weekend (November 1-3, 2013)
BRUSSELS BEER CHALLENGE HOME PAGE:
Below is our BrewView on the Gold Medal winner, GULDEN DRAAK.
APPEARANCE / THE POUR:
ABV: 10.5%. Poured into a tulip shaped glass at 58°F. Pours a deep murky brown with an extremely dense 3-finger light tan head. Bubbles are tight, the head sustains for 4-5 minutes until it starts collapsing. Dense, thick Brussels lace forms on the sides of the glass as the head collapses. Very slow rising meniscus. Note: 30 minutes into drinking this beer, and there still is a ¼” head on it. Very dense Brussels lace as the beer is almost completely consumed.
AROMA / BOUQUET:
Heavy treacle toffee bouquet up front, vanilla and breadiness in the background. Almost no hop aroma.
Definite alcohol bite which is a bit prickly upon first taste. The flavor is dark chocolate, raisins, deep caramel, toffee. Almost port-like.
MOUTHFEEL / PALATE:
Very creamy, full palate, this one really assaults all the olfactory senses. Deep toffee and figs in the aftertaste.
FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:
APPETIZERS: Rich blue veined cheeses.
ENTRÈES: Rib eye steak cooked medium rare with sweet potatoes.
DESSERTS: Crème brûlée, Chocolate pudding laced with Biscoff cookie spread, Chocolate Mousse.
One of the best beers in the world. World class. We’ve enjoyed this several times over the past 17 years. Seek this one out… quite an awesome beer.
