Ovila® Abbey Ales are a series of Belgian-inspired beers brewed by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico, CA in collaboration with the monks at the Abbey of New Clairvaux in Vina, CA. An homage to the time-honored monastic brewing tradition, Ovila Abbey Ales combine the quality and craft of those dedicated artisans with a dose of American brewing innovation. Featuring ingredients grown by the monks on the grounds of the abbey, Ovila Abbey Ales are a fresh twist on the ancient brewing tradition. (Text courtesy of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.)
OUR BREWVIEW OF OVILA ABBEY SAISON
APPEARANCE / THE POUR:
Pours a medium golden color with a 2-3 finger dense head. Brussels lace is good on sides of glass when head collapses. Meniscus is medium rising; appropriate for this style of beer.
AROMA / BOUQUET:
Citrus, classic Sierra Nevada hoppiness, with the peppercorn aroma in the background. Grapefruit, Orange peel.
Taking note that Sierra Nevada like to put their spin on classic beer styles, this beer is no exception. The citrus flavors from the Mandarin oranges used is dominant. This is definitely an American twist on a classic Belgian style. Lots of white pepper flavors, good spicy phenolics with a good balance of hop dryness to complete the flavor profile; hop balance is something that Sierra Nevada is famous for in their beers.
MOUTHFEEL / PALATE:
Medium tartness, a bit puckering, with slight heat from the peppercorns. The hop finish is there, but not in your face.
FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:
Cuisines- Asian, Mexican.
Good overall product, again definitely an American twist on A classic Belgian style. Not as grassy or funky as Belgian Saisons are, it is a well made beer. You can always count on Sierra Nevada brewing to make a solid product. A good session beer in our opinion, available year round at many retail outlets.
