Well, well, well! How could we not offer a BrewView on one of our favorite go-to beers, PIRRAT? What can we say about this beer that has not already been said? We’ve enjoyed this beer since it first became available here in California in the late 90’s. It’s one of the world’s top 50 beers, and in our top 10…. so far. When a newbie wants to try an “IPA” we always recommend they try Piraat.
APPEARANCE / THE POUR:
10.5 % ABV. Served at 57° F in a brandy snifter / tulip shaped glass. Pours a coppery color, with a very dense, whipped egg-white rocky 3-finger head. because of the alcohol content, the head does collapse at a medium rate, but not too quickly. Extremely thick Brussels lace on the glass as the head collapses (and we ensured this glass was “BCG” (Beer clean glass)). The meniscus is EXTREMELY slow rising in this beer. The head retains a rocky, dense shape to the end with at least a 1/2″ height. This beer is truly beautiful to look at. The corked version is even better.
AROMA / BOUQUET:
The bouquet on this beer is absolutely fantastic. Heavy fruity, estery aromas. We’ve enjoyed this beer for many years, and we have always detected a butterscotch nose on it.
This is the funny part- the brewery loosely categorizes it as an IPA. Or is it a Belgian Pale Ale? Or is it a Triple? Or is it a Triple IPA?? We’ve tasted IPA’s and Pale Ales from Belgium… flavor wise, we feel it leans more towards a Trappist-style Tripel. It has that deep biscuity, caramel malty sweetness, huge phenol spiciness at the same time. Wonderful yeast flavors, massively complex beer.
MOUTHFEEL / PALATE:
We love it when beers don’t try to “hide” the alcohol bite and “hit” upon tasting, and Piraat is definitely one of those beers! Spicy and hot, this beer assaults the olfactory sense in a big way. Yet creamy at the same time.
FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:
Piraat is one of those rare beers that can be paired with foods of a wide range of tastes. There are simply too many to mention here. Foods you can pair lighter colored beers with, you can pair with Piraat. The same goes with more savory foods… desserts, etc.
Piraat is one of those beers that you savor… and enjoy slowly. If you rush this beer, you will be missing out on all the wonderful sensory experiences. This is a MUST HAVE world class level beer, one of the world’s greats without a doubt. Seek this one out- especially in the corked version. Truth be told, we have never had this one in the draught version. That’s next…
