TAKE THE BLACK STOUT is the second of the GAME OF THRONES beer series from Brewery Ommegang. Although we’re not fans of the television show, we are certainly fans of Ommegang’s beers- and have been since 1997. We had heard lots of good stuff about this beer, and since it is a limited release (and it was INTERNATIONAL STOUT DAY on the day we tasted this (11/8/2013)) we decided to give it a go.
APPEARANCE / THE POUR:
ABV: 7%. Poured at 59°F into a shallower, tulip shaped glass. Pours almost a completely opaque black color, with a nice tan head with medium sized bubbles. The head collapses somewhat quickly, but not too bad. Leaves good Brussels lacing behind. Meniscus is medium rising.
AROMA / BOUQUET:
Nice roasted malts, classic stout nose upfront, toastiness, and a earthiness that we were trying to pin down. We didn’t read that it is also brewed with star anise and licorice root. Once we read that, the big AH HAH! Moment hit us.
Dark baker’s chocolate, espresso, roasted walnuts, chestnuts, earthy, woody, spiciness from the hops.
MOUTHFEEL / PALATE:
Dry, earthy, dark baker’s chocolate. The dryness lingers.
FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:
APPETIZERS: Blue veined cheeses. Oysters in the half shell. ENTRÈES: Steak! Rib eye- good charring on the outside, medium well on the inside. DESSERTS: Vanilla ice cream with crème de Pirouline Chocolate Hazelnut wafers, Belgian truffles, crème brulee.
A complex tasting Belgian-style stout, the earthy character makes it a good standout. Again, since this is a limited release, get this while you can. A well made beer.
