TO CELEBRATE THE WORLD’S LARGEST SPORTING EVENT, what better beers to BrewView than beers from Brazil (the host country of this year’s WORLD CUP?)
In a very special collaboration with specialty beer importer ARTISANAL IMPORTS, we are very fortunate and pleased to bring you our BrewViews on 3 WORLD CLASS beers from WÄLS CERVEJARIA. For the rest of June, we’ll be BrewViewing Belô São Francisco Brazilian Dubbel, Belô Ipê Brazilian Quadrupel, and Belô Petroleum Brazilian Imperial Stout. Today’s BrewView will be on PETROLEUM.
ABOUT WÄLS CERVEJARIA
In the past few years, Wäls has become one of the most respected breweries in the world, their influence being felt outside of Brazil. Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery collaborated on a beer with them, joining the Brothers Carneiro in the sugar cane fields to harvest and refine sugar for the first sugar cane beer. At the prestigious Mondial de la Bière competition in Montréal, Quebec, Wäls was awarded an unprecedented 5 medals, including Platinum for their Brazilian Imperial Stout Belô Petroleum.
The beers of Wäls are bold, but balanced. They are often reinterpretations of classic styles brewed with uniquely South American ingredients, which lend surprising colors, scents and flavors. A deft hand in the brewhouse makes beers that are at once drinkable but memorable. With no doubt, Brazil’s craft brewing scene is exploding!
CRAFT BEER WITHOUT BOUNDARIES BY THE BROTHERS CARNEIRO
Brothers Tiago and Jose Felipe Carneiro started early, brewing alongside their father as teenagers. They are a passionate duo, with ideas and techniques far off the beaten path. Their brewery is located in the city of Belô Horizonte and was the first in the country to feature a tasting room.
It is this city that gives their beers their brand: Belô. Translated as “beautiful, fine, handsome or lovely” It is all these terms describe the elegant beers of Wäls.
“We produce works of art that can also be called specialty beers. Our line of products is inspired by the traditional schools of Belgian, English and Czech style brewing.”
BEER STYLE AND COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION FROM WÄLS CERVEJARIA
Style category: Russian Imperial Stout
Taste: Loaded with cocoa, chocolate and coffee aromas, some roasty notes, vanilla and bready yeast. Rich and complex. Velvet and smooth mouth feel, with a light carbonation. Slightly hoppy balanced with high alcohol. Dark and rich as the name says. It pours like the essence of night, with no sign of foam. Slowly, bubbles rise from the depths, creating a luscious tan foam collar.
On the name: Petrus (Rock) + Oleum (Oil), Petroleum is the Brazilian crude oil in the form of beer. “A very dark beer, very viscous. The name says what to expect from this beer that is gushing from our brewery in Brazil. It’s a great discovery, indeed!”
OUR BREWVIEW OF WÄLS CERVEJARIA- PETROLEUM BRAZILIAN IMPERIAL STOUT
APPEARANCE / THE POUR:
11.0 % ABV. Poured into a snifter-shaped glass, and served at 50°F. Pours a opaque black color- even holding it up to the light, you cannot see a trace of light being able to penetrate through it. It is extremely viscous, and pours with the same thickness and consistency of microwaved pancake syrup! The dark tan / horse saddle leather colored head pours a 2-finger height, however because of the high alcohol content, the head collapses very quickly (it was a challenge to take a picture of the head at a 1/2″ in the picture!) What lasts of the head is very tightly bubbled and extremely dense. As the head collapses, the Brussels lacing it leaves behind is even but not too thick. (We ensured this was a “Beer Clean” glass). The meniscus rises extremely slow and murky- ultra high gravity. This is a bottle conditioned beer, but that is a moot point (in terms of visual aesthetics due to the black color of the beer.) As the beer is consumed, it leaves “sheeting” on the sides of the glass with it’s color, similar to how a good quality Cabernet Sauvignon sheets the sides of a wine glass.
AROMA / BOUQUET:
Wow- immediate intense bouquets of dark cocoa, roasted espresso, deep dark chocolate. There are even some gentle cedar wood / fresh lumber aromas, and aromas of a cigar humidor, but they are in the background. Burnt toast, and toffee aromas are also in the mix. Intense dark malt aromas, with fresh yeast.
Deep, massively complex espresso and dark chocolate / cacao flavors. Burnt toast, smoky, roasty. The fresh yeast taste in the beer is almost a butter cream flavor. There is a barrel wood flavor, but very gentle and in the background.
MOUTHFEEL / PALATE:
There is virtually no carbonation feel in this beer. The mouth feel is extremely oily, extremely viscous, thick- imagine drinking consumable crude oil. The texture is like a sipping a Godiva Chocolate liqueur. The high alcohol finish is strong, and bitter chocolate / cacao and espresso flavors linger for a long time.
FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:
APPETIZERS: Blood sausages, Andouille sausages, blue-veined cheeses- Stilton, Roquefort, soft triple cream cheeses.
ENTRÈES: Barbeque- mainly beef. You could pair sea urchin with this beer for a seafood choice due to its buttery, creamy richness.
DESSERTS: Anything chocolate or cocoa. Crème brulee, chocolate mousse, rich deep chocolate cheesecake. Speculoos cookie butter on Belgian chocolate truffles. Imagine making ice cream with this beer!
What an outrageously complex beer. “FANTASTIC” is the main word that comes to mind. This beer is brewed at a WORLD CLASS level. Our impression of this beer is “wow, wow, wow!” It is a must try for sure, it’s one of the better Imperial Stouts in the world today, for sure. We cannot speak highly enough of it. Our hats off to the Brazilians… they are quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the brewing world. Our extreme thanks to ARTISANAL IMPORTS collaborating with Belgian Beer Journal to make this beer review possible. PERTOLEUM is a must have, seek this one out for sure! Bela cerveja, a cervejaria Wäls!
