BREWVIEW ON BROUWERIJ DE BRABANDERE WITTEKERKE WILD

My conversation back in October 2016 with Will Keller, owner of Belgian-Style Ales, resulted with him asking if I wanted to BrewView one of their newest additions (at the time) to their retail line up. “Wittekerke Wild is an excellent beer, and I know you would enjoy it.” I took his suggestion, but advised him that the BrewView would not be posted until sometime at the beginning of 2017, due to previously scheduled commitments.  I had seen this newest creation from Brouwerij de Brabandere, and was already curious about it. Will’s suggestion came at the right time.

When opening the can for the first time (for some reason, it still sounds funny to say that when describing a high quality, Belgian craft beer) we were pleasantly surprised, and enjoyed our first experience with it…

If it weren’t for BELGIAN-STYLE ALES,  we would not had the chance to BrewView this beer at all, without having to drive several hundred miles to the nearest metro location that carries the Brouwerij de Brabandere line of beers. If you live in an area (like us) where Belgian beer availability is limited, you can have the best of Belgian beers shipped right to your doorstep just like we had Wittekerke Wild sent to our office!Belgian Beer Journal (2016-4-8) horizontal

ABOUT BROUWERIJ DE BRABANDERE

HISTORY – 5 GENERATIONS OF THE DE BRABANDERE FAMILY

Brewery De Brabandere looks back on a rich history, and looks to the future with equal confidence. The dream cherished by founder Adolphe De Brabandere at the end of the nineteenth century when he laid the foundations for his brewery in Bavikhove has come to fruition in the successful company of today.
Their rich assortment of beers is enjoyed by connoisseurs far beyond their borders. Brewing was, is, and will continue to be, an art at De Brabandere.

Their numerous characterful beers can be considered as their heritage: made with traditional craftsmanship, authentic ingredients and… lots of love. To create unique flavour sensations for you to share with your friends is what motivates those at De Brabandere, day in and day out.

120 + years of taste, passion, and pride… without compromise.

THE BREWERY’S NEW NAME

With a new generation, the Bavik Brewery chooses for a new name: Brouwerij De Brabandere. This with a respectful wink at 120 + years of history. Hand in hand with a tasteful future.
138916912352cd09e3d4ce72-31676459“In 2014 the brewery celebrated its 120th birthday.” says Ignace De Brabandere. “This was the ideal opportunity to review our strategy, look up our authenticity and redefine our values.”

“With an external survey and an investigation within the brewery in collaboration with many people who’ve been behind our brewery since a long time, we’ve been able to distillate our values and turn them into a positive story. This story is transformed into our new visual identity of the brewery.” says his son Albert De Brabandere.

PASSION DRIVEN PEOPLE FOR THE FINE ART OF BREWING

Love for brewing is locked in the genes of the De Brabandere family. With the best master brewers at their side, generations have continued the tradition and expanded the rich assortment of beers.
Over the years, they have shared this passion with their employees: they bring “life to the brewery” and life in your glass, at home or with friends. Their passion flavors your pleasant and memorable moments with friends… they are extremely proud of this.

AUTHENTICITY – VALUE DRIVEN

Authenticity starts with top quality original ingredients used to brew in the traditional manner. They only use real aroma hops and pure water from their own natural source.

Another irreplaceable and rare ingredient is time. Brewery De Brabandere grants each beer the time to mature gently and acquire its full aroma. You can really taste this.

Authenticity also means being true to their origins and values. Their heart is in Bavikhove, at what started as a farm brewery. No wonder they have always been involved with what inspires the people around us, and have played an active role in local social life, cycling races, football and with the local middle class.

INNOVATION – AU SERVICE DE LA QUALITÉ

The De Brabandere brewery swears by its traditional brewing processes, but is also constantly on the lookout for innovations to develop better beers and new flavours. They are not nostalgic people, stuck in the past, but progressive master brewers who want to maintain their excellent reputation among beer connoisseurs and beer lovers.

Innovations have resulted in an unprecedented palette of taste experiences.

BREWED FOR BEERLOVERS

Connoisseurs taste their exceptional way of brewing in every glass. Each beer in their rich assortment provides connoisseurs and beer lovers an unparalleled taste experience. Their lagers, specialty beers, and high fermentation beers often win awards at international beer competitions.

The reason our fantastic beers have been awarded numerous prizes is thanks to their motto: never compromise on taste. Cheers!

BEER STYLE AND COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Style category: Belgian Wild Witbier

Wittekerke Wild…
A beer to blow your mind and refresh your soul.

Harvest… The wild idea to use the microflora derived from the Petrus Oak foeders into another beer has never seen before. Through a new technique at Brewery De Brabandere they are able to harvest those wild yeasts and bacteria that live on the inside of the oak foeders .

Unleash… By unleashing the microflora into Wittekerke, their sessional wit beer, a unique refreshment is created. A wild idea in first fermentation.

The refinement and refreshment of Wittekerke Wit united with the harvested and unleashed wild yeast and bacteria, results in a unique balance of wit beer and sour aromas. This ultra-flavoured and refreshing session beer is easily accessible for everyone … and demands for more than one!

Wittekerke Wild, The Ultimate Sour Refreshment!

OUR BREWVIEW ON BROUWERIJ DE BRABANDERE – WITTEKERKE WILD

APPEARANCE / THE POUR:
5% ABV,  we served at 40° F (verified by a Vacu Vin snap thermometer) in a tulip-shaped glass.

It easily poured a 3-finger height, white colored head that is dense, rocky, with large and small bubbles (we did ensure the glass was “beer clean.”)

The beer color is in between a Straw and Pale Gold, SRM value between 3-4. The meniscus is medium rising, rim color variation stays the same. The Brussels lacework the head left behind once it collapsed (within 7-8 minutes) was even-sheeted but very dense on the sides of the glass. The head kept at a 1/4″ height during the entire consumption time… very nice.
AROMA / BOUQUET:
Nose is of Foeder wood, horse blanket, wet hay, grapefruit, Meyer lemon, and a very faint hint of sweeTARTS original candy. Neither one aroma overpowers another; they are very well balanced and harmonious. The aromas are somewhat akin to an Oude Geuze.

TASTE:
The aromas definitely carry over into the taste. Great balance of spiciness and lacto sourness.
MOUTHFEEL / PALATE:
Light to medium bodied, immediately tickles the entire mouth with its effervescence and tartness. Yet it still is easy on the palate for a witbier that has been kicked up with lacto sourness. It is those exact characteristics that make you want that next refreshing sip…

FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS

APPETIZERS:
(Cheeses) Rich, Blue veined, or Washed Rind cheeses would go very well- many to choose from. Because of its palate scrubbing acidity, you could enjoy it with a Charcuterie platter with rich cuts of meats.

ENTRÈES:
Wide open- poultry, seafood, game, beef. Way too many to mention here. What we can say, that even though this is a light colored beer, its flavor profile opens it up to many cuisines. It is one of the most versatile beers out there. A true degustation beer.

DESSERTS:
The trend for desserts lately is now for offerings that are more on the savory side. We would suggest pairing Wittekerke Wild with Lemon Thyme Shortbread, poached pear with herbs, Bergamot, orange and thyme semolina olive oil cake, and of course, classic cheesecake.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:

Fans of the PETRUS line of sour ales and witbiers will love Wittekerke Wild! This is a very complex beer, and can be enjoyed all year round. Fantastic drinkability, a true session beer. This would be a great beer to introduce your friends to sour / wild ales. Seek this one out for sure… if you can’t find it at your local retailer, then you’ll want to have it shipped directly to your doorstep from our affiliate, Belgian-Style Ales!
