Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you most likely have heard in the news that Belgian Beer Journal’s home base of Redding, California has been devastated by the now infamous Carr Fire that started on July 23, 2018. As of August 30, 2018 at 7:00 PM PST, CAL FIRE reported that the fire is 100% contained!!
Thursday, July 26, 2018 was a day that will live in infamy for residents of Redding. The 26th, and the next day were the days that the Carr Fire ravaged our city at its worst. Over 30,000 people were forced to quickly evacuate of which many lost their homes, 5 lives were lost on the 26th- an 81-year-old bulldozer operator by the name of Don Ray Smith, died while operating the heavy equipment during the blaze, and Jeremy Stoke, 37, a 14-year veteran of the Redding Fire Department, was tragically killed while trapped in the also infamous “Fire Tornado” while doing his duty in saving lives. Melody Bledsoe, great grandmother of James Roberts, 5, and Emily Roberts, 4, were trapped in their home by the raging flames as Ed Bledsoe, (husband to Melody and great grandfather to James and Emily) was on an errand to get supplies. Unfortunately, Ed was not able to make it back safely to their home as the fire grew too big, too fast, and was forced to witness Melody, James, and Emily perish in the fire from a distance.

Some days later, there was an unidentified elderly victim found in the devastation- the name has not been released as of August 30, 2018. Jairus Ayeta, 21, was a PG&E lineman apprentice who lost his life on August 4, 2018 working in the Carr Fire. Cal Fire mechanic Andrew Brake, 40, lost his life on August 9, 2018. Even one life lost is tragic, however, the loss of life has been limited to 8 people.

There has been a great and consistent relief effort going on since this fire tore into Redding. Our community was devastated, but we all came together to help one another. The beast has been slain, but here is yet more help needed. More work to be done. The recovery effort will last for months, even years.

We will rebuild. We will rise from the ashes. We are… SHASTA STRONG.

VIDEO- THE CARR FIRE: ONE MONTH LATER

This video depicts the start of the Carr Fire in Shasta County on July 23, 2018. It also shows how this voracious fire ravaged much of West Redding, California just 3 days later.

This video also remembers the 8 people who were lost in the Carr Fire. We also pay homage to all those who have battled this blaze. On Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 7:00 PM PST, CAL FIRE achieved 100% containment, with 229,651 acres burned.
